The Burns family’s new home is being constructed on McCall Street.
Ms. Burns lives with her three daughters and two sons in a house rental. She has
one son who is mentally-disabled. Her three daughters currently share a bed in
one room and her two sons have a room. There is a rat infestation problem in
the kitchen as well as a terrible foul odor from the back yard where sewage
drains. The house is poorly-insulated and because of the odor, she keeps the air
conditioning unit turned on to help ventilate the house. As a result, she
receives high utility bills.
In addition to the housing conditions, the family lives in an unsafe
environment. Two years ago, a bullet from a drive-by shooting entered their
living room and landed in the kitchen while Ms. Burns’ daughter was watching
television.
She is very excited to partner with Habitat and learn about constructing her
home so her family can have a better place to live.
