Hattiesburg Area Habitat for Humanity

Contact Us

Hattiesburg Area Habitat for Humanity, Inc., an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1990. Under the direction of a volunteer Board of Directors, Hattiesburg Area Habitat works in partnership with low-income families to build simple, decent, and affordable housing in the Hattiesburg area.

Our most recent project was one house in Rawl Springs being built by multiple teams of Collegiate Challenge student volunteers during the month of March.  Our goal for the fiscal year of 2009-2010 is the construction of 10 - 14 houses. Check the Construction page for more details.

Our Vision: The elimination of substandard living conditions in the Hattiesburg area.

Our Mission: Hattiesburg Area Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization committed to assisting families in need with the life-changing opportunity of buying simple, decent, affordable housing in partnership with a team of enthusiastic volunteers and staff guided by Christian values.

The houses are built using volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials contributed by churches, businesses, foundations, groups, schools, and private individuals.

Our values and principles:

Hattiesburg Area Habitat for Humanity plays an active role in the development and construction of affordable housing units. We collaborate with many other housing providers and community-based agencies. Nevertheless, our core programs are distinct from many of the other agencies:

  • Working hand-in-hand with people in need produces a sense of empowerment and accomplishment. This provides an environment for positive life changes.
  • We believe homeownership produces more responsible and active citizens, which improves communities and cities.
  • When people act in response to human need, giving without seeking profit or interest, we believe the effects are multiplied by God. The miraculous happens when we step out in faith. We do not charge interest or make a profit on Habitat homes.
  • We believe in bridging theological differences, using the hammer as an instrument to manifest God’s love.
  • We acknowledge the community building power of partnering with donors, volunteers, faith-based communities, businesses, organizations and homeowner families.
  • We believe in the importance of our volunteer ministry. Our goal is for each of these volunteers to come to a deeper understanding of the need for affordable housing and the situations faced by Hattiesburg Area's low-income families

*********************************

The Hattiesburg Area Habitat for Humanity family & friends honor the memory of Mr. Earl Watson, Jr. our beloved Construction Supervisor and friend.

WE WILL DEFINITELY MISS HIM!

"He was a great member of our staff...A lot of the staff called him 'Pop,' and volunteers usually ended up calling him 'Uncle Earl,' ... He was loved by everyone who came out to work with him."

A memorial service was held on Friday, June 13, 2008 at Dixie United Methodist Church in Hattiesburg for Earl E. Watson, Jr. who died June 7, 2008 in Jackson, MS.  More than 90 people came to show their love for Earl and his family.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, monetary donations can be made to Mrs. Margaret Watson in c/o Hattiesburg Area HFH at P.O. Box 1092, Hattiesburg, MS 39403 or contributions can be made in memory of Earl Watson, Jr. to Hattiesburg Area HFH at P.O. Box 1092, Hattiesburg, MS 39403.
