Habitat
Project Description: Hattiesburg Area Habitat
began site development work for its very first subdivision of
Habitat homes in August, 2009. The build site is located just off of Edwards
Street at 1741 Edwards Street, Hattiesburg, MS. Our plans are
to build ten (10) houses including green space which would be
landscaped with a small park-like area for the families. From
April, 2008 to May, 2009, multiple application orientations were held to select
the first set of families who will qualify for these homes.
The families have incomes within the low-income range of 30
– 60% of the area median income and are in need
of simple, decent and affordable housing. Currently, we have
six (6) of the ten (10) families selected.
The exciting part of this
project is that Hattiesburg Area Habitat was approached in 2008
by First Baptist Church of Hattiesburg with the idea to build
all ten (10) houses with members from the faith community as
part of a weekend blitz build in 2009. The planning
committee selected Friday, September 25th through Sunday,
September 27th as the blitz build weekend. This
blitz build encompassed multiple organizations such as
churches, schools, businesses, etc. coming together in unity to
help Hattiesburg Area Habitat build for families in need of
affordable housing.
Habitat House
Sponsorships: By July, 2009 we had
commitments from
fourteen (14) area churches
pledging to come together to build/sponsor
five (5) of the ten (10) houses. These house sponsorships range
from 10% of construction costs at $7,000 for partial
sponsorship to 100% of construction costs at $70,000 for a full
sponsorship. These sponsorship dollars cover the actual
construction costs associated with building these houses, such
as materials, tools, foundations, professional labor fees, as
well as some of the land and infrastructure costs. Sponsors also provided the volunteer labor for the house in which
they sponsored during the blitz build weekend. Our volunteer
committee also recruited additional volunteers, both individuals and
groups, to help in this effort. Other sponsorships were available for meals,
beverages, ice, t-shirts, media, etc.
The Goal: The
goal of this blitz build project was to have all five (5) houses
near completion at the end of the build weekend. To accommodate
this effort, we had volunteers, such as student groups
and others, work with us during the weeks just prior to the
build weekend to pre-build the walls, site preparation, and
other things.
